Gate Register vs ANPR: What Changes When a Camera Reads the Plate

Walk up to most factory gates in India or the Gulf and you will still find a thick register on the guard's desk. It works, until you need to find one truck from three weeks ago, or prove when a contractor's vehicle actually left. That is where automatic number plate recognition changes the job.

The hidden cost of the gate register

A paper register looks free, but it costs time at every entry. The guard has to read a number from a dusty plate, write it, check a pass and often call the stores or dispatch office. Each truck waits one or two minutes. At peak hours that becomes a queue on the road outside.

The register also has errors. A 6 becomes an 8, a letter is skipped, a vehicle is written twice. When there is a dispute about a delivery or a weight, nobody can trust the record.

What changes when a camera reads the plate

  • Speed: the plate is read as the vehicle slows down, and approved vehicles pass straight through.
  • Proof: every entry has a photo, time and lane. Disputes are settled in seconds.
  • Search: you can pull every visit of one vehicle, transporter or day with a single filter.
  • Alerts: blacklisted or unknown vehicles are flagged before the barrier opens.

The guard's role does not disappear

ANPR does not replace security staff. It removes the writing work so the guard can focus on exceptions: a plate that cannot be read, an unbooked truck, a driver without documents. Sites that explain this early get much better cooperation from their security teams.

Where to start

Pick the gate with the most trucks and run the camera alongside the register for a few weeks. Compare both records, fix camera angles and lighting, then retire the paper. Most managers are surprised how quickly the queue shortens.

Suraj Informatics brings plate reading, barriers and weighbridges together on the GATIVRA platform.
